Feng Shui Art: Selection, Placement, Purpose and History
Both art created with Feng Shui in mind and art for aesthetic enjoyment play a significant role in Feng Shui enhancements.
There is a story of the Forbidden City in Beijing: the Emperor called all the reknowned Feng Shui masters to his palace. He offered them a great reward to build him the best center of power. Once they completed the project, they were sentenced to death!
When visiting the Forbidden City, one finds art all over the palace. This art reflected the ultimate ruling power of the Emperor. Even today, the picture of Mao Zedong is placed in a power position at the entrance of the Forbidden City.
Selecting Feng Shui Art
In feng shui, whatever you bring into your home should reflect your good wishes and taste. If a piece of art disturbs you, you should not have it in your home. Beyond this, the subject, colors, orientation and composition (meaning metal, wood) of your art can have feng shui implications.
Feng Shui Art and The Secret
You may remember in The Secret video where Marie Diamond, feng shui consultant (whom I studied under, by the way!) was consulting with a fashion photographer who was having trouble "getting woman." She looked at the art he had painted in his home and noted that all of the pieces were pictures of women with their back turned. His life reflected his art! She suggested instead that he draw pictures of women with him, looking at him. The short story is: it worked too well. He got lots of women, but no one special. So she suggested he paint the one woman he wanted with him in the picture. He did, and ended up getting married soon after.
Selecting Art for Feng Shui Cures
In addition to paying attention to art from an aesthetic standpoint, you can also use feng shui art for remedies or enhancements. For instance, fish are thought to be symbols of good fortune. Having a painting of fish in your wealth area can enhance this aspect.
A painting of a waterfall, river or stream in front of your desk (at office or home) simulates good luck flowing to you. Never hang such paintings behind you.
Feng Shui Art for the Bedroom
It is recommended in feng shui that any art in your bedroom be lush, lovely and in multiples, not single. If you are married or in a committed relationship, pay special attention to the relationship corner of your bedroom. This is a good place to hang pictures of the two of you together.
You should not have mirrors in your bedroom: this is like introducing a third person into your space.
You Have to Like it Too!
Remember that feng shui must please you or its purpose is thwarted. If you really hate that fish painting, don't hang it! Your environment should reflect your own tastes and likes. Use feng shui principles as a guideline.
